The relationship between grandparent and grandchild is a special one. Sharing experiences creates memories that last a lifetime. SIUC's Touch of Nature in Makanda Illinois will be hosting a unique camp for grandparents and their grandchildren ages 10 and above. The Mississippian Heartland Intergenerational Camp begins Monday June 19th and ends on Friday June 23rd. . The cost of the residential camp is $500.
The Mississippian culture was the largest pre-Columbian civilization in North America before European explorers arrived. Touch of Nature will serve as base camp as we explore earthen mound cities, a glacier-carved canyon with pictographs and petroglyphs, bluff top village sites, stone forts, museums and more. Grandchildren and grandparents will share quality time learning the histories and mysteries of this fascinating culture. A trip to Cahokia Mounds, a UNESCO World Heritage site, caps our week. Touch of Nature will serve as basecamp - 3,100 acres of the Shawnee National Forest nestled against scenic Little Grassy Lake. Lodging is included. Check in begins Sunday, June 18 at noon.
