Excerpt from Original Press Release After 100 years asleep, the beautiful princess is waking up on the Rend Lake College stage for the 2017 Fall Play “The Sleeping Beauty of Loreland.” The cast and crew are working hard for opening night, set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2 in the RLC Theatre, with evening shows at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3 and Saturday, Nov. 4, and a matinee final show at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5. The version of Sleeping Beauty coming to RLC’s stage is a three-act play written by Frances Homer in 1935, and more closely resembles the original “Grimms’ Fairy Tale” than the popular 1959 Disney film. Director Tracey Webb will make this her 44th show for RLC, not including the annual “Flummoxed Fairytales.” She said this performance offers a different message to young audience members than the popular animated film. “The prince who awakens Sleeping Beauty is actually in love with her before he ever actually sees her. This, to me, is a stronger message than the one in Disney’s story. Good looks will fade in time, but to truly love a person, you have to love the way their mind works,” said Webb. “It’s a lively show and full of comedy.” As for the cast and crew, Webb said she’s thrilled to have such an amenable group filling multiple roles and learning many new skills According to the Director “This is a family-friendly show. Good conquers evil and true love wins in the end. Best of all, there are moments of great tension and other moments of great comedy. The entire ensemble is working very well together, and I don’t think anybody in the audience will go away disappointed,” Ticket are on sale now for “The Sleeping Beauty of Loreland” and cost $12 each. Contact the Box office to reserve a seat at 618-437-5321, Ext. 1467. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2 through Saturday, Nov. 4 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, all in the RLC Theatre. “Even if you’ve never seen the classic Schoolhouse Rock television series, you’ll leave this show feeling like you’ve learned a little something new,” said Callie Smith, sophomore at SIC and member of the cast. Schoolhouse Rock Live! follows Tom (John Suh of Zeigler), a nerve-wracked school teacher who is nervous about his first day of teaching. He tries to relax by watching TV, when various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music, through songs such as “Just a Bill,” “Lolly, Lolly, Lolly,” and “Conjunction Junction.” “This show is more than just fun, it’s educational with lots of songs and subjects that people will remember from the cartoon,” says director Gareth York. “For those who have never been exposed to these songs and characters, I look forward to seeing their reactions. For those who do remember, I invite them to join us on a trip down memory lane.” Additional roles include Tom’s romantic side: Jordan Richey (Benton) and Bryce Wiley (West Frankfort); Tom’s goofy side: Kyli Grathler (Carrier Mills) and Callie Smith (Eldorado); Tom’s sweet side: Ethan Brinkley (Carmi), Alex McRoy (Harrisburg) and Donovyn Valdez (Carrier Mills); Tom’s cool side: Braden Cummins (Carrier Mills) and Brady Hodson (Harrisburg); and Tom’s mature side: Carson Brimm (Harrisburg), Heidi Willis-Smith (Harrisburg) and Katherine Woodard (Carmi). Aaron McRoy of Harrisburg will be the stage manager for Schoolhouse Rock Live! The set design is the product of the cast and members of Allan Kimball’s scene design class at SIC. Costumes will be designed by Janet Hart and Gareth York, and John Hart of Hart’s Music in Harrisburg will once again provide the sound equipment. The cast will be performing for area schools at SIC throughout the week, and includes a new component this year thanks to a cross-listed class that combines education and theatre. Students in this class are putting together teaching packet materials based on the show to give to each of the teachers whose classes attend the performances. Materials include a crossword puzzle, word search, and a variety of interactive activities for the classroom or home. According to instructor Allan Kimball, “Many of the students are education majors learning to bring theatre aspects to the classroom to help enrich their future students’ learning experience.” Schoolhouse Rock Live will be open to the public for one night only on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. in the George T. Dennis Visual & Performing Arts Center at SIC. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students, staff, and seniors. On Friday, Sept. 29, replicas of the Pinta and Nina, are scheduled to open for tours in Cape Girardeau. The ships will be available for tours by the public from Sept. 29 through Oct. 2. The ships will be docked at Riverfront Park until their departure early Tuesday morning, Oct. 3. The caravel ship Nina was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools. Archaeology magazine called the ship “the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built.” In 2005, the Pinta, also a caravel, was launched in Brazil and was the first ship to sight land in the New World. Historians consider the caravel the Space Shuttle of the 15th century. Both ships tour together as a new and enhanced “sailing museum” for the purpose of educating the public and school children about the caravel, which was a Portuguese ship used by Columbus and many early explorers on their journeys of discovery. While the Pinta and Nina are in port, the general public is invited to visit the ships for a walk-aboard, self-guided tour. Admission charges are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $6 for students ages 5-16. Children 4 and under are free. The ships are scheduled to be open every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and no reservations are necessary. Teachers or organizations who want to schedule a 30 minute guided tour with a crew member can set up their tour at www.ninapinta.org. The docking of the Pinta and Nina coincides with the second annual Cape Girardeau Heritage Days, as well as the Missouri Conservation Department’s Day on the River on Sept. 30.
