The Night's Shield's new program, The Children's Crisis Shelter, is now open in West Frankfort, according to a news release from The Night's Shield. The Children’s Crisis Shelter program serves families from the entire state, especially Southern Illinois. According to the news release, the program is a temporary emergency child care shelter that provides short-term care for children from birth to age 18, and for families who are experiencing a severe disruptive crisis. Also, with cold temperatures, homes that are unexpectedly without heat or flooded because of broken pipes, are also crisis situations. The Night's Shield can provide a warm, dry, safe, and cozy place temporarily for their children. Children receive 24-hour quality crisis care for 24 to 72 hours, depending on the needs and goals of the family. For more information, call 618-932-6400. In its 16th year, there are 3 miles of colorfully lighted displays. Admission to the extensive lights display, presented by the Du Quoin Tourism Commission, is $10 per vehicle. Hours are 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. each evening. There is even more fun on the weekends when FREE activities and entertainment are offered in the Exhibition Hall. Entertainment will run for the next two weekends at the Exhibition Hall, which also features visits with Santa, train rides, a kids corner, model trains and entertainment. The Southern Illinois Children’s Choir exists to enhance children’s lives through choral music education and performance, while building a world-class choir. The SICC , now in its second decade is organized for the musical enrichment of area children and the enhancement of the musical life of southern Illinois. The choir is open is open to girls and boys with unchanged voices. The community-based organization consists of four treble choirs, each based on the skill levels and ages of the children. Auditions take place at the SIUC School of Music at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters and rehearsals take place each Tuesday evening of the academic school year at Altgeld Hall on the SIUC campus. The Autism Academy of Southern Illinois strives to provide resources to children / parents of Southern Illinois in and around Williamson County with Autism and related disorders. As a non-profit organization, the Academy's goal is guiding and acting as a one stop resource for children with Autism related disorders including advocacy, awareness, diet and nutrition education; medical, psychological services, school services and behavioral management among others.
The first annual academy kickoff will be held at Celebrations event center, 1305 Crane Dr, Marion IL 62959 on December 2nd 2017. The event will feature awareness, educational speakers, music, dinner and auctions to benefit the children. The cost per ticket is $25. Murdale True Value Hardware is hosting an annual fundraiser for Toys for Tots on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Receive a free lunch if you bring in one or more toys. Lunch will be available to purchase. Donations will be accepted. All proceeds from the event will go to the Shawnee Detachment 812, Marine Corps League's 2017 Toys for Tots Campaign. All toys and monetary collections received will be used to provide Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in Southern Illinois. Local Students Featured in Artstarts' Production of Hunchback of Notre Dame Thursday through Sunday11/14/2017 Artstarts is a not for profit organization that is dedicated to providing and promoting opportunities for students from the area to pursue their interests and develop their talents in music, art and theater. With their support, students from the region are presenting a musical production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, beginning November 16th- 19th. About 60 area youth, ages seven to eighteen are involved in the production. which will be held in Marion at the Marion Cultural and Civic Center. Performances are schedule to begin at 7:00pm on November 16th, 17th and 18th and 2pm on Sunday November 19th. Tickets for the show are $15 and can be purchased online or at the door. BY JASON GUERETTE SOUTHERN ILLINOIS MINERS MEDIA SERVICES MARION - The Southern Illinois Miners are pleased to announce that Winter Wonderland, sponsored by Aisin Manufacturing, will return to Rent One Park from Thursday, Dec. 7 through Monday, Dec. 11, marking the second year of the winter fan event. Fans and families can come to the ballpark for fun winter activities all weekend long. On Friday, Dec. 8, the park will be open from 6 until 10 p.m. with a spectacular fireworks show at 9. On Saturday, Dec. 9, the gates will open at 11 a.m. and will stay open until 9 p.m., with Sunday hours being 1 to 8 p.m. Entry to Winter Wonderland is $3 on Friday night and $2 on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at (618) 998-8499, or by visiting the Miners box office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can be bought in advance or on the day of the eventh, and are non-exchangeable, non-transferable and non-refundable. Children under 2 years of age get in free, though activity fees till apply. ALL children (12 years and under) MUST be accompanied by a person age 16 or older. Activities include carriage rides ($3 per rider), ice skating ($5, including skate rental), a 31-foot-high Giant Snowzilla Jr. slide ($3), a challenging snow maze ($3), Glow-In-The-Dark mini golf ($2 per golfer), snowball fights, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus (FREE), and more! Fans can purchase an all-access wristband, which gives access to all activities, except carriage rides, for $14 on Fridaynight(asavingsof$2)and$12on Saturday (a savings of $3). The playhouses, constructed by local high school shop students, will be located on the concourse during Winter Wonderland, and fans can walk around the houses and purchase raffle tickets to win. Carriage rides will take place between 6 and 8 p.m. on Friday night, Noon to 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
