School is back in session after winter break in southern Illinois.  But that doesn’t mean kids and parents won’t be looking for things to do in the coming months.

Get bowled over:  Bowling is a fun and inexpensive activity the entire family can enjoy.  There are bowling alleys in several spots around southern Illinois and include arcades and concession stands.
Let’s roll:  Indoor skating may be more your speed.  There are several roller rinks in southern Illinois, including Carbondale, Marion and Benton.  You can usually get in for under $10.
Who let the Dawgs out?  The Salukis men and women basketball teams are doing well this season.  The SIU Arena hosts games through February.  Learn more at siusalukis.com

Might as well jump! ZFactor Amusements in Harrisburg is new to the area offers everything from trampolines to ice skating to dodge ball.  Check gozfactor.com for more details.

Have a cold one:  In Alto Pass take some time to check out the Bald Knob Cross, then head to the Root Beer Saloon.  Besides root beer there’s ice cream and other menu items. There are hundreds of taxidermied animals, antiques and other odds and ends.

Book it!  Many libraries in southern Illinois have special programs throughout the year.  Check with your branch for details.

Become a brainiac.  The Science Center of Southern Illinois has plenty for kids to do.  They’re located at University Mall in Carbondale.  Hours and programs vary. Call (618) 529-5431.

Pass the popcorn.  Carbondale, Marion, Du Quoin and Harrisburg are just a few communities here with movie theaters. “Norm of the North”, “Kung Fu Panda 3” and “Zootopia’ are among the family friendly features this winter.

Back to nature:  Checking out the Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge, Garden of the Gods or Giant City State Park is free.  Winter days aren’t always cold and blustery in southern Illinois, so enjoy the nice ones enjoying the region’s natural beauty.
