May is traditionally a busy time for families. The end of the school year activities often fills up the calendar. Mix that in with graduations, Spring Sings and award ceremonies and it becomes even more important for families to take time out from their busy schedules to spend some time together having some good old fashion fun.
Here are some ideas of things happening in southern Illinois that you may want to try.
Yard sales can be fun for the entire family. Who doesn't love looking for that special treasure ( or toy?) This weekend there are plenty to choose from. Omaha and Goreville are having community wide sales and there is another community yard sale is scheduled at the Life Community Center in Carbondale. May is National Bike month and a FREE Bicycle rodeo is being held at the Rend Lake Visitor's Center. from 9 am- 11 am. Let the members of the Rend Lake Bike Club show you how to master bicycling. Take a ride through the obstacle course and become a more confident bicyclist. The Bike Surgeon will also be available to check the condition of your bike! The morning will end with an optional ride on the Rend Lake Bike Trail! Open to the public, free admission, and suitable for all ages!
Older kids and parents can learn about bicycle maintenance at a FREE Bicycle Fix It Station demo to be held at Turley Park in Carbondale. The free event runs from 9am- 12 pm . Looking for something a little more open ended just grab your bikes and just take a ride around the neighborhood and explore many of the bike paths in the region.
Families with young children can Make Music with the Belletones at the Carbondale Public Library. from 10 am- 10:30. No registration is required. Or if you prefer, there is always the weekly story hour at Barnes and Noble that begins at 11:00 am. This week's story focuses on "Little Ree" a girl that moves to the country and is first unsure but eventually decides the county is a pretty cool things after all.
How about trying something new? A FREE basic archery class is being offered at Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge from 10am- 1 pm. If water sports is more your thing you may want to learn the basics of canoeing at "Canoe for Two" at Evergreen Park in Carbondale. The event runs from 1pm- 3pm and the cost is $2 per person. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Life jackets and necessary equipment provided.
Sunday marks the official first day of Herrinfest Italiana, one of the region's biggest community festivals. The event kicks off with the Little Miss/Mr, Junior Miss/Mr., & Baby Contest that begins at 2pm at the Herrin Civic Center. Its always a fun event to watch.
