Out with the old, in with the new... is a great way to describe this weekend. Friday is the last day of March and April begins on Saturday. April in Southern Illinois means the winding down of many school activities ( musicals, prom, and award ceremonies), the start of the outdoor Farmer's Markets and the beginning of a season full of outdoor festivals and fun. Here are some of this weekend's highlights.
Its a great weekend for youth theater. Start off the weekend by taking the kids to see Suessical the Musical at the Marion Cultural Civic Center. Presented by Artstarts, the performance highlights the many talents of children from throughout the region. The performance begins at 7:00 pm and tickets are $15. A repeat performance will be held on Saturday. You can buy your tickets at the door or you to guarantee the best seats available, you can buy them online at www.marionccc.com!!
The total show time with intermission will be approximately 1 hour and 35 minutes.
If you live further south, Cinderella, Enchanted Edition, will be presented by the Massac County High School drama team on Friday, March 31 and Saturday April 1st at 7:00 pm at the Baymont Theater 203 E Front Street in Metropolis. (A matinee is also scheduled on Sunday, April 2nd at 2:30pm )Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Pre-school children and younger are free. Concessions will be available.
And in Harrisburg, Carrier Mills High School is presenting Rumpelstilskin. The show also features students from the high school and junior high school choirs, plus several students from second to fifth grade. More than 50 students will take part in the performances."Rumpelstiltskin" will be 7 p.m. T Friday at SIC's George T. Dennis Visual and Performing Arts Center. Reserve seats are $10 and are available by calling Kuhlmann at Carrier Mills-Stonefort High School, (618) 994-2392. General admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children.
And in Thompsonville, the school's Drama Department will present 'Annie Jr.' at 7 p.m. March 31 to April 1 at Community of Christ Church in Thompsonville. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for ages 4 to 17, and free to those age 3 and under.
Have you ever wondered how to fish and didn't really know how? B.O.F. Programs (Becoming an Outdoors-Family) is a series of different Saturday workshops at the Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge that focus on teaching basic outdoor skills to you and your family to help you enjoy nature and encourage you to spend more time outdoors. This Saturday's workshop, beginning at 10:00 am, focuses on fishing and will teach you and the kids the basics of fishing. All equipment will be provided to the younger (or less experienced) members of your family. Bring the whole crew, practice the basics, then end the day with a group bank fishing trip. It's a busy day for kids in Carbondale. Come start on or finish your puppet this Saturday, April 1 at Carbondale Main St. (old train depot) between 10:00 - 2:00! Then, bring the finished puppet to the All Species Puppet Parade on Earth Day April 22,
For those in the Easter mood, the Easter Bunny will be arriving at the University Mall in Carbondale April 1st at 10:30 am!
Later in the day, families can go to the Carbondale SUPERBLOCK just off Lewis Lane for a Family Fun Fair. Focusing on healthy and safe fun, the event is FREE and open to all ages and communities. It focuses on providing safe & healthy FREE fun for ALL ages and Communities. Rain or Shine. Some highlights include the Fire Department SmokeHouse, FREE Hot Dogs Mc Gruff, the Crime Dog , games, prizes and giveaways. The event is sponsored by sponsored by the Positive Youth Development Coalition and The Big Event: Saluki Day of Service.
If the kids like inflatables (and swimming), they will love going to the Hub's Second Anniversary Bash in Marion. The event runs from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, April 1st a an proceeds go to CASA of Williamson County! Purchasing a wristband will get you in to The HUB to swim, go down the waterslide and bounce on nearly a dozen inflatables provided by Inflatable Fun!
